MONTEREY BAY MARINE FORECAST

on Wednesday, 22 January 2020.

 Note: Moderate to locally gusty Southerly winds will persist ahead of a cold front that will continue to move through the region into Wednesday. Winds will generally be light in wake of the frontal passage. A longer period Northwest swell will peak midweek generating hazardous seas conditions for smaller vessels. Another long period Northwest swell will then arrive later this week.

* * * BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT * * *

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through 9 AM Wednesday.
A long period northwesterly swell will continue to impact the coastline from Sonoma Southward through Big Sur with the risk of sneaker waves and rip currents.
Northwest swell of 6 to 8 ft at 16 seconds is expected to last through at least Wednesday morning.
This will generate breaking waves of 12 to 15 feet with some sets as high as 20 ft at favored locations, including but not limited to Ocean Beach, Montara State Beach, Asilormar State Beach, and Marina State Beach.
Steep beaches will have a higher risk of sneaker wave activity with greater wave run-up onto beaches than normally expected.
The long-period swell will bring a heightened risk of Strong Rip Currents, Sneaker Waves and Large Shore Break. Rip Currents can form quickly and water tempuratures near the beaches will be in the high 50's, so hypothermia can set in quickly.
These conditions are especially dangerous for those fishing off rocks and jetties, beach-goers, those climbing coastal rock outcroppings. Use caution when in or near the water, never leave children unattended and NEVER TURN YOUR BACK ON THE OCEAN!
